While going through some of my old things, I’ve run across several items that I simply must share.  I’m not quite a hoarder, but I manage to keep my fair share of sentimental items…

Here’s the short story of one keepsake I rediscovered this afternoon.

There’s no doubt that I’m a theater person, but I used to be far more directly involved than I’ve been in recent years.  I’ve acted in, directed, designed, and produced over 25 shows in my brief-ish career, and have various trophies and awards that document my time trodding the boards.  But nothing beats a really great review…

In June of 2002, I directed, designed and played a small role in E.B. White’s classic “Charlotte’s Web” for the Denham Springs Area Community Theater.

Denham Springs News writer Carol Stuart had this to say about me:

…in his DSACT debut as a quiet country lawyer in ‘Crimes of the Heart’, Wilson’s energy simmered under the surface.  Audiences saw that frenetic force unleashed in his direction and portrayal of Zack in ‘Is There a Comic in the House,’ and barely under control in his role as Speed in ‘The Odd Couple.’

Those of you who’ve never performed onstage may not appreciate the sense of validation such words can bring, but it’s so nice to hear words from nearly a decade ago at a time when compliments have even more meaning.

Born This Way (Single)

Lady Gaga is getting guff about ripping off Madonna with her new single “Born This Way.”

What’s RJW’s position?

Like Billboard.com, I LOVE the song and think any piece of art that promotes self-acceptance is fantastic.

Just look at this young lady and her fabulous cover of the song!

I adore the idea that little kids all over the world are learning that they’re on the right track, baby, they were born this way.  I wish that sort of message was around when I was this girl’s age.

Here’s the official audio:

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL is the feel-good theatrical experience of the year! Based on the smash-hit movie, PRISCILLA is the heart-warming, uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship and end up finding more than they could have ever dreamed of. This week, a friend asked me to design promotional artwork for his newest play Why We Fall.  Here’s a synopsis:

Why We Fall…explores the aftermath of an attempted teen suicide and the possibly dangerous relationship between two young people searching for a way to be heard.

Why We Fall will be heard in a staged reading by Manhattan-based theatre company On the Square Productions in March. The Lafayette, LA workshop is aimed at shaping the show for this reading.

The cast features Erik Schneider as Lee, Martha Diaz as Nela, Cindy Hebert as Maura, Duncan Thistlethwaite as Dan and Robert J. Wilson as Matt.  The reading will be followed by a talk-back with the actors and the playwright. It is free to the general public.

The show contains mature language and subject matter and may not be appropriate for younger audience members.

Why We Fall will be read Feb. 12 & 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Cité des Arts.

For more information, call 291-1122 or click here to RSVP on Facebook.

You read that right; I’m making a return to the stage by originating the role of Matt Strayer in this super-exciting new production!

But back to the artwork, for now.  I put together the following piece that has already received raves from the playwright.  I so enjoy projects like this and am thrilled with the result.  What do you think?
